WHAT is KUNDALINI YOGA?

Kundalini Yoga was brought to the USA from India by Yogi Bhajan in the 60’s. The technology combines ASANA (posture) with PRANAYAMA (breath technique), MANTRA (sound vibration) with MEDITATION and KRIYA (movement).

WHAT is the KUNDALINI ENERGY?

When the Sushumna, Ida and Pingala channels are sufficiently purified the kundalini energy can begin its journey upward.  The Sushumna channel passes through the spine and the Ida and Pingala are located on the sides of the spine. When the Prana (the life-force energy –which is achieved through breath technique) and the Apana (the eliminative energy – which is achieved through the locks) are balanced and can mix, they apply a pressure to the kundalini energy (an immense potential energy inherent in all) at the third chakra or around the fourth vertebra causing the sleeping kundalini to awaken and rise up through the various chakras, bringing about shifts in consciousness. For your protection make sure that you chant the mantra “ONG NAMO GURU DEV NAMO” before each set as the energy in question is extremely powerful.

WHO IS YOGI BHAJAN?

Yogi Bhajan was born in India in 1929. He began yogic training at the age of eight and by sixteen he reached the level of master of Kundalini Yoga. This is a practice that stimulates growth of human consciousness via the technique of breath, yoga postures and meditation and one that had been taught very exclusively in India.

Yogi Bhajan emigrated to the United States in 1968 and opened up these teachings to the West. He founded the 3HO non-profit organization that uses Kundalini Yoga to improve physical well-being and deepen spiritual awareness. The organization also offers guidance in areas of nutrition, health, child rearing and human behavior. The number of 3HO organizations has expanded to 300 in 35 countries.

Yogi Bhajan came to the United States of America with the message “If you can’t see God in all, you can’t see God at all”. The teachers of Kundalini Yoga around the world share this technique starting with the premise that being healthy, happy and holy is the birth right of everybody and through these teachings they share the consciousness that having peace in our hearts and in our homes is the first step in creating peace on earth.

Upon his death in October of 2004 the US Congress has passed a resolution (H. Con. Res. 34) honoring Yogi Bhajan and his teachings.  The US House Representative Tom Udall, D-N.M authored the resolution.  “Whatever your faith, Yogi Bhajan had the right words, the right lesson, the right message,” Udall said. “He spoke to us all. He inspired us. Around the world he has a powerful voice for peace. I am pleased that he has been honored by the Congress today”.

ASANA (posture):

Kundalini Yoga has over 2000 sets or series of postures.  Each set focuses on different mental, physical, emotional aspects of the infinite human capacity. The postures are held an average of 3 minutes. With consistent practice of staying in postures for long durations and working through the discomfort one can get into the space of going beyond the body.

"Keep up and you will be kept up". Yogi Bhajan

PRANAYAMA (Breath technique):

The various techniques are applied during the movements.  The techniques not only increase lung capacity, but bring clarity, focus and control over the mind. Combination of  breath, movement and/or mantra can lead to release of trauma and emotion. This can lead to break of identification with emotion.

MANTRA (sound vibration):

The sound current works to orchestrate the cells into harmony.  The repetition of the words used during chanting activates parts of the brain.  There are 84 nerve centers in the upper palate of the mouth, through repetition of these specific words the tongue is utilized to act like a drum. The nerve centers get activated and send signals to the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. Hence, the thought frequencies change. As the gaps between the thoughts widen one can experience mental clarity and calm, beginning to break identification of the self with thoughts

MEDITATION:

Cleanses the subconscious mind, activates unused parts of the brain (we use between 8% to 10% of the brain capacity) and is a journey towards the connection to the soul.

We are not human beings trying to have a spiritual experience but spiritual  beings trying to have a human experience”.

Yogi Bhajan
